The Battle of Kijkduin (also known as the Battle of the Texel) was fought on 21 August 1673 between the Dutch Navy, again under Michiel de Ruyter, and a combined French fleet and English fleet. The source notes that the Dutch victory “settled the pleit” (see 275), ensuring continued Dutch control of the seas.
Significance for Aceh
By defeating the Franco‑English fleet, the Dutch secured the maritime routes used by the Indische retourvloot to reach the East Indies, where Aceh was a major source of pepper and other spices. The battle therefore helped maintain the flow of goods that underpinned the Dutch East India Company’s economic power in Aceh.
