The unrest at Linggö in 1916 was a threatened outbreak of resistance in the Dösön-vallei of the Meergebied — formerly a very turbulent district — set in motion by a woman teungkoe whom the population regarded as very holy, and suppressed within months with the co-operation of the population itself.
Course of events
There a female Teungkoe, considered by the population extremely holy, succeeded in bringing some twelve gampong people to withdraw into the mountains, where they joined the still-hostile Penghoeloe Möngkör.
Naturally they then committed an attack on a marching bivouac, which however — though at the cost of three wounded soldiers — did not give way and inflicted on the attackers three dead and one severely wounded.
Then it was soon “mèl sadja” again: two more encounters with patrols and two more dead, then eight came in submission, and in September the population itself laid low Penghoeloe Möngkör.
The female saint withdrew for safety’s sake to the Gajò Loeös, but found that formerly so safe refuge for djahats likewise changed: two of her followers were killed by the population and she herself was taken prisoner with the remainder of her convinced adherents.
Significance
The Linggö affair is one of du Croo’s examples of the pattern of the outbreaks of 1913–1918: brief, local, quickly suppressed, and above all suppressed with the active help of a population that no longer had any interest in the bendewezen. That even the Gajò Loeös — once the standing refuge of the irreconcilables of the coast — had become closed to a fugitive holy woman measured how far the pacification had gone by 1916.
A similar movement was set going in December 1917 at Serbödjadi by Penghoeloe Koeala, and ran a comparable course.
