The Governor’s authorisation to Toekoe Nja Banta of 1 September 1893 extended the Dutch alliance policy from the XXV Moekims eastward into the XXVI Moekims of Groot-Atjeh, by permitting the friendly sagi-head Toekoe Nja Banta to open the struggle against the Moslemin in the terrain outside the eastern part of the Dutch geconcentreerde linie.
The decision
Hooijer recorded that the result obtained by Toekoe Djohan in clearing both his own territory and that of Toekoe Nja Mohammad — together forming the XXV Moekims — was so favourable, and the rest in the cleared terrain so general, that de Gouverneur van Atjeh en Onderhoorigheden er den 1sten September 1893 toe overging te trachten die ook te verkrijgen in de terreinen buiten het oostelijk gedeelte onzer linie, door aan Toekoe Nja Bantah, het bevriende hoofd van de sagi der XXVI Moekims, toe te staan ook daar den strijd tegen de Moslemin te openen.
Terms
Rifles and powder were also to be granted to Nja Banta, and his father-in-law Toekoe Neq van Marassa and his brother-in-law Toekoe Tjoet, oeleebalang of the XIII Moekims Toengkoeb, were to help him in the work.
Outcome
The action did not go particularly well, although Dutch troops assisted by temporarily occupying captured points and Dutch artillery was employed against the common enemy. Within a month the Dutch had to garrison one of Toekoe Tjoet’s bentengs at Toengkoeb themselves (27 September 1893); Lamgoet, captured on 4 September 1893, was lost again through Toekoe Tjoet’s arbitrary evacuation; and when Dutch soldiers appeared before Kroeng Kali on 6 October 1893 the hill they had required to be occupied was still unoccupied. The failure demonstrated that without Teukoe Oemar’s help the Dutch allies would not drive the fanatics from the XXVI Moekims.
