The Battle of Selimeum took place on 15 July 1879 when Dutch forces under Governor Karel van der Heijden captured the stronghold of Panglima Polim in the upper valley of the XXII Mukims.
Detailed Narrative
In 1878, Governor Van der Heijden launched an aggressive offensive campaign to subjugate Great Aceh. Advancing into the interior of the XXII Mukims, Van der Heijden mobilized two major mobile columns to encircle the mountain fortress of Selimeum, held by Panglima Polim.
On 15 July 1879, under intense artillery bombardment, Dutch columns stormed the surrounding redoutes and captured Selimeum, driving Acehnese resistance forces out of Great Aceh into the surrounding mountain ranges.
