Famous battle directed by General Van Heutsz from the Batèë Ilië hill (white stone bench marks the spot). The battle took place on the plain of Samalanga, visible from the hill. Immortalized in the painting by Hoynck van Papendrecht depicting Van Heutsz and his staff (with several well-known figures) following the changes of the fierce battle. A ‘Van Heutszbank’ monument was erected on the hill.
