Raja of Gighen Letter of Submission was a formal diplomatic letter sent by the Raja of Gighen to Commander-in-Chief General J. van Swieten on 30 December 1873 (11 Dzoelkangidah 1290 AH), during the opening phase of the Second Aceh Expedition against the Aceh Sultanate.
Content and Context
Following the capture of coastal strongholds around Meuraxa and Pekan Badak by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army, the Raja of Gighen wrote to General J. van Swieten formally offering the submission of the coastal dependency of Gighen to the Dutch East Indies Government.
Strategic Impact on Dutch Command
The receipt of the Raja of Gighen Letter of Submission, alongside similar overtures from Pedir and the assistance of Teuku Nek of Meuraxa, reinforced General J. van Swieten’s assessment that coastal Acehnese dependencies were abandoning the royal court at Kraton of Aceh.
This document formed part of the factual basis for the General van Swieten War Telegrams transmitted to Batavia in January 1874, which predicted the general pacification of northern Sumatra.
