Pasanggrahan (plural pasanggrahans, Dutch logeerhuizen) was the government rest-house of the Netherlands Indies — the traveller’s bungalow maintained by the administration in places too small or too poor to support an hotel. Moens, travelling through Atjeh in November 1913 during his journey through Atjeh, recorded that lodging was to be found at all the smaller places of Atjeh in the pasanggrahans of the government, which, though somewhat primitive by the nature of the case, offered all that was needed, and that in the larger places there were simple hotels besides.
The Fransche barak of Sigli
The curiosity among the pasanggrahans of Atjeh was the „Fransche barak” (French barrack) of Sigli, in which Moens passed the night. The building had originally been an officers’ barrack of the so-called Madagascar type — a light construction intended to be taken down and re-erected — resting about a metre above the ground on gas-pipes, with wooden window-frames pasted over with paper; and it bore the facetious notice, famous in the Indies rest-house tradition, verboden te rooken en te snorken (forbidden to smoke and to snore), at which, Moens confessed, he had laughed heartily for some moments.
