1854 was a pivotal year in Atjeh and broader Acehnese history, witnessing both the re‑imposition of Atjehnese overlordship over the east‑coast statelets of Langkat, Deli and Serdang and the Dutch capture of the fortified Chinese Kongsi stronghold of Montrado on Borneo. The De Buitenbezittingen, Deel II, Afl. 3 (1918) notes that the three northern coastal principalities—Serdang, Deli and Langkat—had previously managed to escape the influence of Siak but were “forced since 1854 to submit to Atjeh, which had indeed become their overlord that year.” The document states: “Serdang, Deli en Langkat, welke zich los hadden weten te maken van Siak’s invloed, waren al sinds 1854 gedwongen geworden in plaats daarvan dien van Atjeh toe te laten, welk rijk daar sedert dat jaar inderdaad opperheer was.” This re‑assertion of Atjehnese suzerainty reinforced Atjeh’s claim to the northern coast of Sumatra and re‑established a tributary relationship that had been disrupted in earlier decades.
Capture of Montrado
In the same year, Dutch forces launched a decisive assault on Montrado, a heavily fortified Chinese Kongsi settlement on the western coast of Borneo. The operation, carried out by a squadron that included the steamship Borneo, succeeded in breaching the stronghold’s defenses and securing the site for the Dutch East Indies administration. Contemporary reports described the victory as ending “the protracted conflict that had threatened the Sultanate of Aceh’s trade routes along the island’s western coast.” The fall of Montrado removed a major obstacle to Dutch maritime dominance in the region and secured safer passage for Acehnese and Dutch commercial vessels alike.
