The Toba Lake — Tobameer — was the great lake of the Batak country of northern Sumatra in whose midst lies the island of Samosir, where Dr. J. Tijssen conducted the trachoma campaign of 1933 recorded in Een strijd in Atjeh (1934).
Tijssen wrote: “Midden in de onvergetelijke pracht van het Tobameer ligt het eiland Samosir.” — In the midst of the unforgettable splendour of the Toba Lake lies the island of Samosir. The lake appears in the pamphlet as the setting of the comparative case that closes the account: having found in the kampongs of Atjeh a country of cataract, he found on Samosir in the Tobameer a country of trachoom, and among nearly a hundred thousand people not a single cataract among the candidates presented to him.
The journalist C. Graadt van Roggen, noticing the doctor on shipboard, recorded that “Had ik niet eerder moeten zien, dat hij rechtuit kwam van Samosir, sprookjeseiland in het Tobameer?” — the fairy-tale island in the Toba Lake — the phrase by which the reader first learns of the campaign that would close the series of letters.
