Koerong Raba Bay was a strategic coastal bay and anchorage situated west of Meuraxa along the northern coast of the Aceh Sultanate, which served as the primary invasion landing site for the Second Aceh Expedition in December 1873.
Geographical and Military Significance
Protected from the heaviest surf of the northeast monsoon, Koerong Raba Bay offered deep-water anchorage for the invasion fleet of the Dutch East Indies Government.
In December 1873, General J. van Swieten ordered his armada to bypass the fortified redoubts at Meuraxa and execute the Attack on Koerong Raba. Marine and infantry battalions debarked at the bay, securing a permanent coastal base from which Dutch columns launched their overland advance toward Pekan Badak, Sinangri, and Kraton of Aceh.
