Koeala Boga — modern Kuala Boga — is a place on the sea-coast of the landschap of Peureula (Perlak) in the onderafdeeling Langsa, the retirement-place of the old oeléebalang Teukoe Tjhi Perlak after his pilgrimage to Mekka in 1914. There he had planted his own coco-palms; there he lived with his second wife, surrounded by twelve of his sixteen children and many grandchildren; and there he still walked every morning along the sea, ‘waarover eenmaal de Nederlanders zijn gekomen, die al 50 jaar zijn vrienden zijn’ — over which once came the Netherlands, who have been his friends for fifty years. The four-kilometre road from Peureula to Koeala Boga is the road by which, about fifty years before Broersma’s visit, the negotiators of the Dutch government moved with the chiefs of Perlak, when they did not take the water-way by sloop.
