Keumangan is a great landschap in the eastern part of the vallei of Pidië, whose oeléebalang at the time of Broersma’s visit was Teukoe Oemar, ‘van een oud en aanzienlijk geslacht’ — of an old and distinguished lineage — whose features betray his Bengali descent. The two great chiefs of Pidië were, of old, those of Pidië and of Keumangan; between them the predominance in the ancient region lay, and both wished to seize it. Teukoe Oemar lives at Beureunoen on the Atjeh-tram in a large dwelling, before which spreads a spacious yard with grass and trees, accessible through an iron gate between high stone pillars. Within the yard he has built a new house in the Atjehnese style, entirely decorated with carving and with the mouldings picked out in colours — a building which has, at least for a few years, revived the art of wood-carving in this region.
