Kampong Djentarek was a fortified settlement in the interior of Acheh that was assaulted by Dutch marine forces during the 1868‑1869 campaigns. The village’s defenses included high stone walls and densely built houses, which forced the attackers to advance “under a rain of large stones” before finally breaching the fortifications.
1868 Assault
During the attack on 24 October 1868, the marine landing division, under the command of officers such as Lieutenant P. Spanjaard and Lieutenant D. A. van Vuuren, engaged the defenders of Kampong Djentarek. The Dutch troops employed artillery and infantry assaults to overcome the “blocked passages” and eventually secured the village.
Significance
The capture of Kampong Djentarek demonstrated the Dutch military’s capacity to overcome heavily fortified Acehnese villages, contributing to the broader colonial pacification of the Aceh coast.
