Lieutenant J. H. van Wely was a Dutch marine officer who designed the Adams‑Francotte revolver conversion used by the marine landing division during the Acehnese expeditions of the late 1860s. His invention allowed the marine infantry to employ rear‑loading revolvers (caliber 11.2 mm) until they were replaced in 1890.
Connection to Aceh
The upgraded firearms were deployed in the 1868 assault on Bandjar and the subsequent attacks on Kali-Anget and Kampong Djentarek, enhancing the firepower of the Dutch marines.
Significance
Van Wely’s technical contribution improved the effectiveness of Dutch marine troops in Aceh, illustrating the interplay between weapon innovation and colonial warfare.
