Swart chose the solution many took in that period: adspirant-onderofficier. On 16 October 1880, aged seventeen, he engaged as a volunteer soldier for six years, with a bounty of eighty guilders, in the battalion of the 8th Regiment of Infantry then garrisoned at Deventer. He deliberately avoided the alternative, the Instructie Bataljon at Kampen, because he did not wish to walk about as a private in front of the comrades who had passed for the K.M.A.
From 1880
On 16 October 1880, aged seventeen, H. N. A. Swart engaged as a volunteer soldier for six years with a bounty of eighty guilders in the 8th Regiment of Infantry at Deventer. In 1880 the costs of the Atjeh-oorlog amounted to 115 million guilders.
