Bookit Koeboe (also Bukit Kubu) is a location on the northern coastal plain of the Gouvernement Oostkust van Sumatra, between the Besitang River and Pangkalan Soesoe on the Aroebaai, designated as the junction point for the Atjeh-tram (narrow gauge, 1,067 mm) and the Deli Spoorweg Maatschappij network (standard gauge, 1,435 mm). A three-rail dual-gauge section from Bookit Koeboe to Pangkalan Soesoe was planned to allow both systems to serve the petroleum port.
Location and context
Bookit Koeboe lies on the coastal plain north of the Langkat cultivation area, approximately midway between:
- Pangkalan Brandan (D.S.M. northern terminus, standard gauge).
- Pangkalan Soesoe (Atjeh-tram terminus / Koninklijke Petroleum Maatschappij oil port, narrow gauge).
- Besitang River (the watershed boundary with Atjeh per Staatsblad [[1908 No. 604]]).
The site was chosen because it was the first point where the two railway systems’ projected alignments converged on practicable terrain.
Gauge incompatibility and the three-rail solution
The Atjeh-tram (Staatstramwegen in Atjeh) used narrow gauge (1,067 mm); the D.S.M. used standard gauge (1,435 mm). Through-running was impossible. The solution was a dual-gauge (three-rail) track on the shared section Bookit Koeboe–Pangkalan Soesoe, allowing:
- Atjeh-tram narrow-gauge rolling stock to reach the oil jetties.
- D.S.M. standard-gauge wagons to access the petroleum traffic and northern cultivation produce.
The 1918 Dienstregeling of the Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij explicitly notes: De Atjehtram heeft smalspoor, de Delitram breedspoor, zoodat op het gemeenschappelijke baanvak 3 rails noodig zijn.
Construction status (1918)
- D.S.M. section Pangkalan Brandan–Bookit Koeboe: binnenkort tot stand komt (soon to be completed); the Pangkalan Brandan–Besitang subsection was already complete and metalled (sand surfacing).
- Atjeh-tram to Pangkalan Soesoe: operational; tank steamers calling regularly.
- Three-rail section Bookit Koeboe–Pangkalan Soesoe: under construction / planned.
- Missing link Besitang–Bookit Koeboe: the final gap in the D.S.M. line to the junction.
Economic rationale
The D.S.M. sought the connection to:
- Capture petroleum traffic from the Koninklijke Petroleum Maatschappij for haulage to Belawan (though tank steamers loaded directly at Pangkalan Soesoe).
- Draw northern cultivation produce (rubber, tobacco from Langkat, Besitang) to Belawan-Deli rather than Penang/Singapore via coastal steamers.
- Integrate the northern frontier into the D.S.M. feeder network (vangarmen pulling traffic to Medan/Belawan).
The Handelsvereeniging Medan supported the link as complementary to the Belawan Oceanhaven (Plan Nobel) development.
Administrative significance
Bookit Koeboe lay just south of the Besitang watershed boundary (Staatsblad [[1908 No. 604]]), placing it firmly in Oostkust territory (onderafdeeling Beneden-Langkat). The Atjeh-tram crossed the boundary at Besitang into Atjeh territory (onderafdeeling Tamiang) before reaching Pangkalan Soesoe. The junction thus straddled the governmental frontier, requiring coordination between the Gouvernement Oostkust van Sumatra and the Gouvernement Atjeh en Onderhoorigheden.
Significance
Bookit Koeboe is, in the Encyclopaedisch Bureau’s account, the principal infrastructural hinge between the Oostkust and Atjeh railway systems — the junction whose three-rail compromise was the only practicable response to the gauge incompatibility between the D.S.M.’s standard gauge and the Atjeh-tram’s narrow gauge. The junction’s location immediately south of the Besitang watershed boundary made it the principal frontier point of the Oostkust — the point at which the two gouvernementen met, not in legal abstraction, but in the practical topology of rails and gauge.
