He was made corporal on 16 March and sergeant on 30 October. Being a few days too young to sit the examination for the Hoofdcursus within the year, he was obliged to remain two years on the course at Arnhem; after six years in all he passed out through the Hoofdcursus as an officer with a middling examination number. He re-engaged for a year on 16 October 1886 and on 21 November 1886 was appointed 2de luitenant in the infantry of the army in the Netherlands Indies by royal decree no. 18 of 24 November 1886.
