Winkelman was a European fusilier of the Netherlands Indies Army killed on 25 September 1897 at the mouth of the Goeah Teroes cave on the Glé Betoes, during the patrol from Lho-Nga under Captain J. N. C. Baron van Heerdt.
He fell with 1st Lieutenant J. van Greuningen and the fusiliers Winkelman, Tuk and Dissel when about fifteen Acehnese appeared suddenly from behind a rock face and opened fire à bout portant on the party that had approached close to the cave. The native fusiliers Bongsowikromo and Tanja were severely wounded in the same volley.
The dead were carried down the mountain in tandoes and taken the same day to Koeta Radja for burial on the Petjoet cemetery.
