W. J. A. Jonckbloet was a Dutch scholar, politician, and member of parliament who authored the influential Jonckbloet Note of 10 May 1873 criticizing the political assumptions of the First Aceh Expedition.
Critique of the First Expedition
Writing on 10 May 1873, immediately after the withdrawal of General E. C. van Daalen’s forces from Kraton of Aceh, W. J. A. Jonckbloet published a scathing analysis of the Dutch East Indies Government. He famously wrote that the government had attempted to conquer the Aceh Sultanate “with a coup de théâtre,” expecting immediate capitulation.
General G. G. Booms prominently cited W. J. A. Jonckbloet in his 1875 monograph to prove that contemporary parliamentary observers recognized that the primary causes of the expedition’s defeat lay in governmental overhaastiness rather than military errors.
