Van der Hegge Spies was a luitenant ter zee (2nd class) who participated in the Edi River expedition (1890). During the June assault, his right‑hand marine platoon engaged an Acehnese klewang‑armed defender; despite being struck by a klewang blow to the head, he continued fighting and was among the first to breach the enemy fortification.
