Toekoe Nja Hassan was an Achehnese who murdered the head appointed by the Dutch over the returned population of the kampongs (villages) of Siem and Kroeng Kali in the XXVI Moekims of Groot-Atjeh after the Dutch column’s operation of 1880.
The murder
G. B. Hooijer recorded that the column which in 1880 had to penetrate the northern part of the XXVI Moekims met a strong resistance and could approach and burn the kampongs of Siem and Kroeng Kali only after two days of fighting. Toen de daaruit gevluchte bevolking na eenigen tijd wederkeerde, werd het door ons over haar aangestelde hoofd door Toekoe Nja Hassan vermoord — when the population that had fled from them returned after some time, the head appointed over it by the Dutch was murdered by Toekoe Nja Hassan.
The episode illustrates the fragility of Dutch attempts to install nominated chiefs over returning populations, a difficulty repeated in the 1890s with T. Tjoet Toengkoeb.
