Potjoet Maligoï — radja Potjoct Maligoï — was an Acehnese radja who, after the surprise of 30 June 1880 of the garrison of Samalanga by the male population of Batoe Iliq and the surrounding kampongs, negotiated with the Gouverneur of Atjeh, generaal K. van der Heyden, who had himself taken the command of the punitive expedition and had arrived in the roadstead of Samalanga on 22 July 1880. From the talks that were opened, the radja obtained from the general six days’ delay within which the inhabitants of Batoe Iliq were to evacuate their kampong; the term passed without result, and on 30 July 1880 the offensive was resumed, ending in the third échec and in the decision — condemned by Coblijn in Hoe Atjeh te onderwerpen — to abandon further attempts upon Batoe Iliq.

Verstege’s chapter on the national character names the same woman of Samalangan: in the campaigns the Dutch waged there in 1877 and 1880 (see Van der Heyden’s Samalangan campaign), the reins of authority in Samalangan were effectively in the hands of Potjoet Maligoï, “de halve zuster van den door opium-gebruik ontzenuwden Samalangangschen vorst” (“the half-sister of the Samalangan prince unnerved by opium use”), and “deze energieke vrouw liet de mannen, die niet tegen ons wilden strijden of zich laf gedroegen, eenvoudig ontmannen” (“this energetic woman had the men who would not fight against us or behaved cowardly simply emasculated”) — an anecdote that Verstege brings as one example of the contempt in which a lad-hearted man is treated, above all in the highlands, at Atjeh, and first of all by the women.
