Major B. Mekern commanded the central column of the Dutch expeditionary force in Aceh during the winter of 1875–1876. He directed the march from Bockit Daroe toward the Atjeh-rivier and oversaw engagements at Daroe and Kajoe‑leh.
Leadership
Mekern’s column included marine units, infantry companies, and artillery sections. On 30 January 1876 his troops were forced to cross a swampy sawah, suffering casualties from both enemy fire and the difficult terrain.
Strategic Decisions
After encountering the Atjeh River on 5 February 1876, Mekern halted further advance, ordering a retreat to the north to avoid further exposure to enemy fire.
