Luitenant Hageman was a Dutch lieutenant of the Netherlands East Indies Army killed together with Luitenant Veerman in the assault on the Achehnese benteng of Kota Toeankoe in Groot-Atjeh, an action fought some five years before 1893 and recalled by G. B. Hooijer as the only occasion besides the relief of Kroeng Kali and the attempt on Kaloet on which the Dutch had operated in strength outside the geconcentreerde linie during the ten-year concentratie period.
Death before Kota Toeankoe
Hooijer recorded that Hageman and Veerman, with several of their men, fell some hours before the main action in their attempt to seize the benteng, which they hoped to find abandoned because an enveloping battalion was to approach it from the far side. Only a small outwork, in which thirty dead Achehnese lay heaped, fell to the Dutch, at a cost of three times as many dead and wounded of their own.
