Luitenant Veerman was a Dutch lieutenant of the Netherlands East Indies Army killed, together with Luitenant Hageman and several men, in the attack on the Achehnese fortification of Kota Toeankoe in Groot-Atjeh some five years before the events of 1893 described in De verlaten posten in Groot-Atjeh.
Death before Kota Toeankoe
Hooijer recorded that nearly three battalions with the necessary cavalry and artillery had entered the same terrain in which Overste Sievers later operated — north of the kampong (village) strip — in order to take Kota Toeankoe, which threatened the Dutch line of posts. The lieutenants Veerman and Hageman, with several of their men, had fallen some hours earlier in their attempt to take possession of the benteng, which they had hoped to find evacuated by its garrison since it was to be approached from the other side by an enveloping battalion.
After a long and furious fight, all that fell into Dutch hands, at a cost of three times as many dead and wounded, was an outwork of ten by fifteen metres of interior space, within which lay a heap of thirty fallen Achehnese.

Already in the first year of the concentration a lieutenant Veerman appears in majoor Perelaer’s list of the Dutch losses inside the line: on 9 June 1885, at the building of a dyke near Siroen, luitenant Veerman and two workers were wounded (see Guerilla raids inside the concentration line (1885)). The same officer well may have been the Veerman who, before the events of 1893 in Groot-Atjeh, fell with luitenant Hageman at Kota Toeankoe as described above.
