J. van Teijn was the Dutch Major-General who commanded in Atjeh in 1890 and whose partnership with van Heutsz demonstrated, in du Croo’s judgement, “that the Acehnese adversary had respect only for purposeful force”.
As commander-in-chief van Teijn sent the order to advance at 6.08 a.m. on 11 June 1890 in the attack on the Boekit Roembia near Idi, and came with van Heutsz into the captured fortification where the colours were planted and the Wilhelmus played. After his retirement the Government again chose the policy of waiting and negotiating, so that “after a short and feeble administration by General Pompe van Meerdervoort, General Deijckerhoff took office.”
