J. M. P. Kluit was a luitenant ter zee (2nd class) who commanded the marine landing division during the Edi River expedition (1890). Under his leadership, a force of roughly one hundred men disembarked from the warship Hendrik der Nederlanden at Edi on 8 March 1890.

He is noted for his decisive action during the June 1890 assaults on the left bank of the Edi, where his troops captured enemy positions and repelled a klewang‑armed Acehnese counter‑attack.
