Du Croo dated the closing stone of the pacification eighteen years after Swart’s retirement, in the speech Governor Van Aken delivered at the handover of the government to Resident Jongejans on Saturday 7 March 1936: ”…I also express my particular thanks to the officers exercising administrative authority … and the finest compliment I can pay to you, Sir, as Provincial Military Commander (Colonel J. C. Bongers), and to your officers in this field, is that I now consider the sub-divisions Alaslanden, Lam Meulò, Meulaboh and Tapa’ Toean entirely ripe for civil administration, and that only considerations of economy have restrained me from making proposals to that effect.” Those four were the last sub-divisions still governed by officers. “The pacification was complete; Swart’s great life’s work was accomplished.”
