J. Zwierzycki was a Dutch mining geologist of the Netherlands Indies Geological Survey whose 1922 compilation of the geological map 1,000,000, sheet I — covering Atjeh and the West coast of Atjeh — became the standard cartographic basis for all subsequent colonial-era geological descriptions of northern Sumatra, and whose 1922 report on the coal, iron and other mineral localities of Atjeh remains the principal source for Van Bemmelen’s *Geology of Indonesia* (1949) in its treatment of Atjeh. Zwierzycki’s name is attached, in the standard scholarly citation form “ZWIERZYCKI, 1922”, to nearly every coal locality in the Atjeh list and to the canonical inventory of iron-ore occurrences in the Residency of Atjeh.
The 1:1,000,000 geological map of Atjeh
The most widely cited of Zwierzycki’s Atjeh contributions is the geol. map 1,000,000, sheet I, which Van Bemmelen reproduces (in adapted form) as Fig. 28 of The Geology of Indonesia under the title “Basin of Meulaboh (West coast of Atjeh)”. The map distinguishes Alluvium, Neogene (Pliocene, Miocene), Paleogene (Oligocene, Eocene), Permo-Carboniferous, andesitic effusiva, andesite, basalt, diabase, gabbro, serpentine and granite, and it carried — at the date of its compilation in 1922 — the most complete picture then available of the surface geology of the West-Atjeh coastal plain and its immediate hinterland. Van Bemmelen notes one cartographic correction: the “Losir (Löser)” shown as a volcano on Zwierzycki’s map is “not volcano, as has been indicated on this map, see volume I” — a caution against treating the printed sheet as infallible, but also a mark of how thoroughly the map had become the reference frame for discussing Atjeh geology.
The 1922 inventory of Atjeh coal localities
In the same year Zwierzycki published the inventory of Sumatran coal localities that Van Bemmelen reproduces, with only minor additions, as Table 13 of the coal chapter. For Atjeh specifically, the inventory lists:
- East coast of Atjeh: Ajer Djambu Batang (No. 1), Pendens River (No. 2), Mouth Woini Orong (No. 3, “Seams a few inches thick”), Ajer Baturong (No. 4).
- West coast of Atjeh: Downstream Kr. Kluet (No. 13, “Very thin seams”), South of Tapatuan (No. 14, “Seam 3 ft thick… 10 places”), NW Krueng Teunom (No. 15, “Seam 2½ ft thick”), Krueng Raja (No. 16, “5 seams of brown coal of 2–9 ft”), Krueng Antjong (No. 17, “3 seams of 2–5 ft”), East of Peureu Moue (No. 18), Near Simpane Peust (No. 19), and a further locality (No. 20).
Each entry is cited in the standard form “ZWIERZYCKI, 1922, p. 37” (or p. 38, p. 160, p. 161, etc.), with the older Rinaud references (1885) preserved where Zwierzycki was drawing on Rinaud’s earlier survey.
The 1922 iron-ore inventory of Atjeh
Zwierzycki’s report is also the principal source for Van Bemmelen’s list of Atjeh iron-ore localities. The catalogue in The Geology of Indonesia (Fig. 41 and key) lists eight Atjeh localities — Kr. Geuenteuet (No. 1, cited to Hövig 1918 p. 87 and Jansen-Lindberg-Wolvekamp 1922 pp. 131–132), Gle Mon Ampeuet (No. 2), Kr. Ligan (Babah Loh) (No. 3), Kr. Rigaih (No. 4), Alu Talu (No. 5), Kwala Boe and Tjot Plaj (No. 6/7), A. Pentuwa Gade (No. 8), and Kuto Buloh (No. 9) — and the great majority are cited, alongside Jansen-Lindberg-Wolvekamp, to Zwierzycki’s 1922 report. The same 1922 publication is also the source for the 1920 reserve estimate of 2,600,000 tons of 58–64 % Fe ore at Kr. Geuenteuet.

Van Bemmelen cites Zwierzycki on several other Atjeh and northern-Sumatran topics:
- On the geological map of Tapanuli (Blad VII, 1922, p. 49), in connection with gold-bearing quartz-veins along the A. Pendung.
- On the cinnabar occurrence at Sungei Salak in the upper Merangin region of Djambi (ZWIERZYCKI, 1930, p. 129).
- On the granodiorite contact at Gunung Serot on Semangko Bay in the Lampong Districts (Zwierzycki, Exploration to geol. map, Kota Agung, p. 27).
- On the Radjabasa iron-ore deposits (Zwierzycki, Expl. to sheet I of the 1:200,000 geol. map, Telok Betung, p. 28).
The recurrence of Zwierzycki’s name across these northern-Sumatran localities suggests a geologist who, in the years around 1922–1930, was effectively the Geological Survey’s senior field-mapper for the Barisan Range and adjacent coasts, and whose reports accordingly formed the substrate on which all later colonial mineralogical work on Atjeh was built.
Significance
Zwierzycki is significant for the encyclopedia of Acheh history because his 1922 map-sheet and report constitute, in effect, the first systematic geological description of Atjeh as a territorial unit. Earlier reports by Rinaud (1885) and Verbeek had addressed individual districts or localities; Zwierzycki’s map and inventory brought them into a single frame. For the historian of Atjeh’s colonial economy — for the study of coal-exploration, iron-ore prospecting, the gold-bearing rivers of the Westkust, the basin of Meulaboh, and the broader mineral geography of the residency — Zwierzycki’s 1922 work is the indispensable printed source.
