G.M. Verspijck was a Major-General in the Dutch East Indies Army who served as second-in-command during the Second Aceh Expedition in 1873–1874.
Tactical Planning and Command
Following the death of General Johan Harmen Rudolf Köhler in April 1873, General Verspijck established the Bureau of Military Equipment in Batavia to organize the second campaign. He authored an initial operational plan advocating a flank maneuver via Kuala Gigieng to bypass fortified river defense lines.
During active operations in Aceh, Verspijck commanded field forces during key engagements, including the Battle of the Tiban Line on 14 December 1873 and the Battles of Lembu on 25 December–26 December 1873. On 24 January–26 January 1874, he commanded the primary assault column that executed the Encirclement and Fall of the Kraton.
Public Controversy
Following the campaign, Verspijck published detailed critiques challenging Supreme Commander Jan van Swieten’s defensive tactics, sparking widespread public debate in Dutch military circles regarding colonial strategy in Sumatra.
