The Battle of the Tiban Line occurred on 14 December 1873 during the Second Aceh Expedition, when Dutch assault columns stormed the main coastal defense line built by Tuanku Hashim.
Detailed Narrative
The Tiban Line was an extensive 1,800-meter field fortification system comprising earthworks, palisades, and log redoutes manned by 3,000 to 4,000 Acehnese defenders under Tuanku Hashim.
At 7:00 AM on 14 December 1873, Major-General G.M. Verspijck deployed three half-battalions and mountain guns in battle formation before the eastern redoutes. Supported by naval gunfire from offshore warships, Dutch infantry launched a frontal bayonet charge.
After fierce hand-to-hand combat, Dutch troops captured the central redoute at Kota Perak, suffering 8 killed and 39 wounded while Acehnese defenders left 120 dead inside the works. On 15 December 1873, Acehnese forces evacuated the remaining positions, allowing Dutch units to reach the mouth of the Aceh River.
