The Vereeniging “Ons Leger” (Society “Our Army”) was a Dutch society founded in the late nineteenth century to promote public interest in, and support for, the Dutch armed forces. The Vereeniging was the principal public vehicle for Snijders’ post-war agitation on behalf of the national defence, and the body in whose name he undertook his first Indies journey in 1920. The Vereeniging also published the illustrated monthly magazine Ons Leger, in which many of Snijders’ post-war articles and the memorials of his death appeared.
Snijders’ Chairmanship
After his resignation as Opperbevelhebber in November 1918, Snijders became chairman of the Vereeniging “Ons Leger,” in which capacity he undertook his first Indies journey in 1920 — to represent the Vereeniging at the Algemene Vergadering of “Indië Weerbaar” at Bandoeng on 24 May 24 May 1920. He was accompanied by Kapitein van den Generalen Staf E. H. A. van den Akker as secretary. After his return he resumed his agitation for the defensie-vraagstuk; in April 1921 the Proeve eener oplossing van het legervraagstuk was published, the work of a commission of six under his chairmanship. The commission advocated amendment and improvement of the pending draft dienstplicht wet (conscription law) and the corresponding organisatie-wet, and the taking in hand of the question of economic weerbaarheid (economic defence).
The Magazine Ons Leger
The Vereeniging’s monthly magazine Ons Leger carried many of Snijders’ post-war articles, and after his death on 26 May 26 May 1939 the October 1939 issue carried the memorial article by Kolonel b.d. H. Walaardt Sacre, “Generaal Snijders en de Nederlandsche luchtvaart,” which is one of the principal sources for his post-war aviation work.
