Intendance and Supply Service in Aceh was the military commissariat and logistical supply branch of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army responsible for provisioning, arming, and feeding troops in the Aceh Sultanate between 1873 and 1876.
Personnel and Operational Burden
According to official tables from 26 December 1875, the Intendance and Quartermaster service in Aceh comprised 29 European officers and 43 indigenous personnel. This small administrative corps managed the complex Transport and Coolie System in Aceh and supervised thousands of forced laborers (Forced Labor in Aceh Military Campaigns).
Criticisms and Performance
As reported from Pekan Badak on 30 December 1875 and 2 January 1876, the intendance struggled against severe environmental obstacles during General Pel’s Campaign in Aceh. Although commentators praised General J. L. J. H. Pel for establishing well-stocked magazines at Sinangri, the Intendance and Supply Service was hampered by a shortage of carriers, which slowed the advance of infantry columns.
