Reconnaissance of the Kraton was an exploratory military mission conducted on 9 April 1873 by the Dutch forces shortly after their Landing on Atjeh’s Coasts.
The Mission
The objective of the mission was to map the interior routes leading towards the Kraton of Atjeh. Guided by the Chinese guide Khoé Tjian Gie, the expedition force approached within 1200 meters of a large structure, which was identified as Atjeh’s Groote Missigit. During this reconnaissance, few enemy combatants were spotted, leading the Dutch command to underesimate the formidable Acehnese defensive preparations. The intelligence gathered directly informed General J.H.R. Köhler’s decision to launch the First Conquest of the Great Missigit the very next day.
