Landing on Atjeh’s Coasts was the initial amphibious operation of the First Aceh Expedition on 8 April 1873, marking the formal start of the Aceh War.
The Landing
On the morning of 8 April 1873, troops from the 12e Bataljon Infanterie and the Marine-landingsdivisie disembarked from their sloops onto the Acehnese shores. They were immediately met by Acehnese resistance from behind the coastal dunes. The landing forces successfully established a beachhead, setting up a strand bivouac that would serve as the staging ground for the subsequent interior push towards Atjeh’s Groote Missigit and the Kraton of Atjeh.
