Operette van Tjaleuë (the underhoofden-action interception) (c. 1930s) was an event in the history of Aceh recorded by Jongejan in Land en Volk van Atjeh Vroeger en Nu. In a landschap with serious friction between the head and the under-chiefs (a movement called the ‘onderhoofden-actie’ that exists in various forms across landschappen), groups of dissatisfied underhoofden-supporters had twice already gone directly to the governor in Koeta Radja, bypassing all instances.

Account
In a landschap with serious friction between the head and the under-chiefs (a movement called the ‘onderhoofden-actie’ that exists in various forms across landschappen), groups of dissatisfied underhoofden-supporters had twice already gone directly to the governor in Koeta Radja, bypassing all instances. Both times the governor personally promised a thorough investigation and asked them to wait. A third such trek was organized, but strict orders came from Koeta Radja that the governor would receive no more deputations and that they should, if necessary, be stopped by force. The author and a controleur posted themselves at the crossroads Tjaleuë, with a brigade under a kapitein housed in a volksschooltje nearby. The first groups were held without difficulty until the estimated number (including instigators) was assembled. The author addressed them first with a friendly chat and managed a flat joke that won over the audience. With no other ‘violence’ than a serious word that hinted it could become bitter earnest, the men were sent home. Within a quarter hour they were busily selling the rice they had brought (at better prices than in their own gampong). When an extra train pulled up to take them home for free, they looked more like a troop of noisy fair-goers in high spirits than a group of the resolute who had sworn to bring down their head.
