The onderwerping van Peusangan en Pasé in 1899 was the campaign of subjection in the north-coast territories of Peusangan and Pasé, in which — according to the 1930 jubilee account of the Korps Maréchaussée — the corps again made itself felt, and which stood under the supreme command of Van Heutsz, by then promoted major-general.
Sequence
The operation followed the Pidië Expedition of 1898, which had been conducted under the supreme command of the then colonel of infantry J. B. van Heutsz and whose success the jubilee number attributed in important part to the Maréchaussée. In the following year the corps “had zich ook doen gelden bij de onderwerping van Peusangan en Pasé in 1899” — had also made itself felt at the subjection of Peusangan and Pasé in 1899. The same expedition, the account records, likewise stood under the supreme command of Van Heutsz, since promoted to major-general.
Context in the corps’s development
The year 1899 was also that in which the establishment of the corps was substantially enlarged: by Gouvernementsbesluit of 3 March 1899 its strength was brought to 20 officers and 1,212 men, divided over five divisies of three afdeelingen, subdivided into four brigades each. The jubilee number treated the period 1898–1906 as the era in which the history of the Atjehnese Guard was marked by “bijzonder-opvallende krijgsdaden” — particularly striking feats of arms — reflected in the royal distinctions conferred during those years.
