The murder of Vallon and Guillaume was the killing, on 9 March 1880, of the two French travellers Vallon and Guillaume in the Tenom river by the people of the Tenomsche robber prince. Verstege recalled the fact in 1886 against the apologists who explained every Dutch reverse in the Archipelago by Dutch aggression alone: the Netherlands had, before 1884, never made war on the Tenom robber prince, and yet his people murdered the two Frenchmen in 1880 — the coast that was to become the centre of the Nisero affair three years later, and from which eventually, in 1884, the most serious threats of English meddling with Atjeh emanated.
