Vallon was one of the two French travellers murdered in the Tenom river on 9 March 1880 by the people of the Tenom pirate prince, together with his companion Guillaume. Verstege recalled the fact in 1886 against the Dutch “Atjeh-friends” who went on claiming that all the Dutch misfortunes in the Archipelago were merely the consequence of an aggressive and cruel conduct of war: before 1884, he pointed out, the Dutch had not fought against the Tenomsche robber prince (see Murder of Vallon and Guillaume (9 March 1880)), and the murder of the two travellers had preceded by four years the Nisero affair in which the Tenomsche China’s coast was once more the centre.
