The murder of the postholder at Anak Paja was the treacherous killing, four days after the hopeful government telegram of 21 June 1883 — that Groot-Atjeh was “nagenoeg geheel van vijanden gezuiverd” (almost wholly cleansed of enemies) — of a Dutch postholder (posthouder) with eight pradjoerits (native soldiers), while eight more pradjoerits were severely wounded. The event, noted by Verstege in 1886 with the dry footnote “Trouwens den 21en Juni 1883 had de Gouv.-Generaal ook getelegrafeerd…” (“Moreover on 21 June 1883 the Governor-General had telegraphed…”), was one of the typical contrasts between the official optimism and the real state of Atjeh in the last years before the concentration.
