The Evacuation of Kroeng Kali in January 1894 withdrew the Dutch garrison from the advanced post at Kroeng Kali in the XXVI Moekims of Groot-Atjeh, a decision that G. B. Hooijer afterwards judged fortunate.
Circumstances
After Toekoe Djohan’s men took over Masdjid Siem and the benteng of Toekoe Tjoet near Kroeng Kali on 21 October 1893, it remained quiet in the district. Ja, de teruggekeerde bevolking toonde zich zoo goed gezind en zelve zoo voldoende tegen de Moslemin opgewassen, dat het in Januari van het volgende jaar onnoodig geoordeeld werd Kroeng Kali langer bezet te houden — indeed, the returned population showed itself so well disposed and so sufficiently a match for the Moslemin that in January of the following year it was judged unnecessary to keep Kroeng Kali occupied any longer.
Hooijer’s retrospective judgment
Dat die ontruiming toen geschiedde, mogen wij gelukkig achten — that the evacuation took place then, Hooijer wrote, may be counted fortunate; for had this advanced post also been invested by the population that immediately took Toekoe Oemar’s side when he declared against the Dutch, a relief undertaken in the circumstances then prevailing would certainly have cost many a drop of blood.
