Adverse engagement of 16 April 1874 was the unfavourable Dutch engagement of 16 April 1874 during the post-Kraton phase of the Aceh War.

Course

The fight followed the Acehnese attack of 11 April 1874 and preceded the departure of the main force. In Van Swieten’s narrative, it underscored the vulnerability of the occupation and the distinction between taking the capital complex and pacifying the country.

Significance

The episode belongs to the continuing Aceh War and the contested consequences of the Capture of the Kraton of Aceh.
