Land en Volk van Atjeh was the work on the land and people of Atjeh by J. Jongejans, written by 1938 and cited by du Croo for the later development of estate agriculture and volksonderwijs.
Jongejans supplied the account of the creation of the estate area on the east coast “at a feverish tempo”, the concession figures to the end of 1937, and the survey of village education in 1938: 328 schools, over 600 teachers, more than 36,000 pupils, and a literacy rate of 1.1 per cent at the census of 1930. He also stressed the dependence of schools, particularly girls’ schools, on the support of the oelèëbalang.
