Avifaunistische Studien in de Gajo-landen — Avifaunal Studies in the Gayo Lands — is a Dutch-language ornithological paper by Mr. Dr. Baron R. C. E. G. J. Snouckaert van Schauburg describing the first of two avifaunal collections made by Ir. Jhr. F. C. van Heurn in Atjeh in 1920, the collection made in the region of Lake Takengon (1200 metres above sea level) in Gajo-land. The paper was published in issue I (afl. I) of the previous Jaarbericht of the Koloniaal Instituut in Amsterdam, and is the predecessor of the Over de tweede Atjeh-collectie van Jhr. F. C. van Heurn, which described the second collection made at Alas Peurba and Aloer Djamboe in September–November 1920.
The collection
The first Atjeh collection of Van Heurn was made in the region of Lake Takengon (1200 metres above sea level) in Gajo-land (Atjeh). The highland, montane character of the collecting locality distinguished this collection from the second, which was made at the lowland estates Alas Peurba (200 metres) and Aloer Djamboe (50 metres) on the northeast coast of Atjeh. The two collections together — the one montane, the other lowland — gave a sample of the avifauna of Atjeh from the interior highlands to the coastal plain, and were worked up by Snouckaert in two successive papers in the Jaarberichten of the Koloniaal Instituut.
Relationship to the other Van Heurn–Snouckaert papers
The Avifaunistische Studien in de Gajo-landen is the first of three papers that record the avifaunal collecting of Van Heurn in Atjeh. The second — the Over de tweede Atjeh-collectie van Jhr. F. C. van Heurn — described the collection made at Alas Peurba and Aloer Djamboe in September–November 1920, and referred the reader back to the first paper for its map. The third — the Over eene collectie vogelhuiden van Oost-Atjeh — was co-authored by Van Heurn and Snouckaert, and described material collected on the same East-Coast estates in a later, more comprehensive treatment.
Significance
The Avifaunistische Studien in de Gajo-landen is significant within the AcehWiki corpus as the source document for the first of the two avifaunal collections made by Van Heurn in Atjeh in 1920, and as the document that established the highland, Gayo-land baseline against which the later lowland, East-Coast collection was measured. The paper is a document of the natural-historical work that was carried on in the interior of Atjeh in the early civilian period — after the Atjeh War and the pacification — by Dutch scientific collectors working through the research institutions of the colony.
