Toeangkoe was the term used within the Korps Maréchaussée for the divisiecommandant — the commander of a divisie — in the corps’s internal hierarchy of Acehnese titles recorded by W. J. Mosselman.
Place in the hierarchy
One Toeangkoe or division commander had under him three Oeleuhbalangs (officers); each Oeleuhbalang four Toekoes (European non-commissioned officers); and each Toekoe one Panglima, one Keutjih and seventeen Kawans. See Maréchaussée-vocabulaire.
The Ouwe
Mosselman also refers to the division commander by the familiar name onze Ouwe — our Old Man: “dan vierde onze Ouwe, onze Divisiecommandant den teugel” — then our Old Man, our division commander, gave us the rein — describing the licence allowed the men when they were off duty and spending the few centen they had saved.
Under the arrangements of 1899, and expressly on the expedition to the Gajo-Loëös of 1904, division commanders were also charged with the civil administration as civiel-gezaghebber.
