The Kroeëng Keureutë is a Noordkust van Atjeh river that drains the Laut Tawar lake and the hoogvlakte of Takengon and Ketol to the Noordkust of Atjeh. In the Encyclopaedisch Bureau’s Sumatra survey (1917), the Kroeëng Keureutë is one of the two principal exceptions (with the Peusanganrivier) to the te korten loop of the Diamantpunt-area Noordkust rivers, and the principal hydrographical connection between the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte and the Noordkust kustvlakte.
Hydrography
The Bureau’s Hoofdstuk I notes that the Kroeëng Keureutë — together with the Peusanganrivier — is one of the two Uitzonderingen to the te korten loop of the Noordkust rivers: “Uitzonderingen hierop zijn: de Peusanganrivier, [die] de afvloeiing der Laoet Tawar naar de Noordkust [overneemt] … voorts de Kroeëng Keureutë.” The Kroeëng Keureutë is thus the second principal hydrographical exception to the te korten loop of the Noordkust rivers — the river whose stroomgebied extends inland to the hoogvlakten of Takengon and Ketol.
Significance
The Kroeëng Keureutë is, in the Bureau’s Sumatra survey, one of the two principal exceptions (with the Peusanganrivier) to the te korten loop of the Noordkust rivers, and the principal hydrographical connection between the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte and the Noordkust kustvlakte. The Bureau’s emphasis on the Kroeëng Keureutë’s stroomgebied — extending inland to the hoogvlakten of Takengon and Ketol — frames the Kroeëng Keureutë as the geographical foundation of the Dutch colonial state’s central-Atjeh bivak at Takengon, and as the strategic hydrographical artery of the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte’s connection to the Noordkust.
