Diamantpunt — Diamond Point — is the northernmost coastal extremity of the Noordkust of Atjeh, east of Sabang and Kotaradja, at which the onbeduidende stroompjes of the Noordkust reach the Indian Ocean after a te korten loop from the Atjehsche kustgebergte. In the Encyclopaedisch Bureau’s Sumatra survey (1917), Diamantpunt is the orographic and hydrographical limit of the Atjehsche kustgebergte, and the eastern limit of the principal Atjeh kust stations.
Hydrography
The Bureau’s Hoofdstuk I describes the Noordkust of Atjeh east of the Westelijke Barisan as follows: “De onbeduidende stroompjes, welke aan Sumatra’s Noordkust, tot Diamantpunt, uitmonden, ontspringen meest alle op de buitenzijde van het Atjehsche kustgebergte en hebben een te korten loop om stroomgebieden van eenig belang te vormen.” Diamantpunt is thus the eastern limit of the Atjehsche kustgebergte — the limit beyond which the Noordkust rivers acquire a te korten loop and fail to form stroomgebieden van eenig belang.
Exceptions
The Bureau notes two principal exceptions to the te korten loop of the Diamantpunt-area rivers: the Peusanganrivier and the Kroeëng Keureutë. “Uitzonderingen hierop zijn: de Peusanganrivier, [die] de afvloeiing der Laoet Tawar naar de Noordkust [overneemt, welke de belangrijke hoogvlakten van Takéngon en Ketol binnen haar stroomgebied betrekt, om vervolgens door de vlakte van Pidië te stromen], voorts de Kroeëng Keureutë, welke [de Peusanganrivier] nog [opneemt].” The Peusanganrivier and the Kroeëng Keureutë are thus the two principal hydrographical exceptions to the Diamantpunt-area te korten loop — the two rivers whose stroomgebieden extend inland to the hoogvlakten of Takengon and Ketol.
Significance
Diamantpunt is, in the Bureau’s Sumatra survey, the orographic and hydrographical limit of the Atjehsche kustgebergte, and the eastern limit of the principal Atjeh kust stations. The Bureau’s emphasis on the te korten loop of the Diamantpunt-area rivers — and on the two principal exceptions (the Peusanganrivier and the Kroeëng Keureutë) — frames Diamantpunt as the geographical keerpunt of the Atjeh Noordkust: the limit beyond which the kustgebergte no longer sustains significant stroomgebieden, and the eastern limit of the hoogvlakte-drained rivers of the Noordkust.
