“And there lies the catch.” Virtually all soldiers governing in Atjeh and there “vastgegroeid” judged the proposition wrong: in their view Atjeh could not for the foreseeable future be governed by B.B. officials. Du Croo set out their case in the imagery of the card game Hombre — “spadille, manille, basta, ponto — de 4 hoogste troeven in het vroeger in Atjeh algemeen gespeelde Hombre-kaartspel.”
