bruidsschat (English: “bridewealth / bride price”) is a term or concept described in Jongejan’s Land en Volk van Atjeh Vroeger en Nu in relation to Aceh. Payment by the groom to the bride’s father, fixed in the presence of witnesses according to the bride’s possessions.

Description
Payment by the groom to the bride’s father, fixed in the presence of witnesses according to the bride’s possessions. Bemiddelaar’s fee = 8% of bruidsschat. Engagement gift = a gold ornament worth half the bruidsschat. Paid on the day after the wedding in Gajo. Settlement of bruidsschat is part of the Islamic marriage contract.
Significance
The term bruidsschat is recorded by Jongejan as part of the cultural, administrative, or institutional vocabulary of Aceh.
