Description
Ancient Acehnese legal tradition, including the bride-price (bruidsschat) institution. To reconcile the institution of a king with existing legal customs, the Atjehnese conceived the land/realm/nation as a ‘bride’ married to a ‘bridegroom’ (the king) who had to pay a ‘bruidsschat’ (bride wealth). Had real legal consequences and persisted until the Dutch conquest.
